Road Trip Essen-Bonn

From Coal to Classics: Our road trip starts in the Ruhr, stops at Düsseldorf and Cologne and ends in ‘Bonnbastic’ Bonn.

The beating heart of Germany

Welcome to Motel One – your accommodation in a prime location in Essen’s city centre. Get ready for a mini trip through time as soon as you step inside this listed building, which was built in the 1950s. To bring the spirit of that era back to life, we’ve tailored our hotel’s interior design to reflect the post-war years of Germany’s economic miracle (or ‘Wirtschaftswunder’). After checking in, you’ll notice something straight away: we’ve turned our lobby into something special (if we say so ourselves) by decking it in turquoise. Curved floor lamps, sideboards and our famous egg chairs combine to create an authentic, feel-good 1950s atmosphere. Monopolising the rear wall of the reception are black and white photos by photographer Horst Lang, which show scenes of daily life featuring the city’s residents between 1950 and 1970 – back when the Ruhr region was still Germany’s beating industrial heart. Our cosy One Lounge is the perfect place to reminisce about days gone by, though our guests can also come here to enjoy a healthy breakfast, relax with a coffee, or spend the evening at the bar with a glass of wine in hand. We have more in store, too: free WiFi and modern rooms where you can crawl into your comfortable box-spring bed after enjoying a hot shower. We’ll even throw in a good night’s sleep for no extra charge – how’s that for service at the right price? We’re sure there’s nowhere else you’d rather stay in Essen other than our affordable hotel.

You don’t have to worry about finding us, either. You can reach our hotel directly from Essen’s main train station either by foot or by getting off at Hirschlandplatz underground station, which is right next to the hotel. No detours required. It also means you can take a trip to Bochum, Dortmund, Duisburg or Düsseldorf with ease – handy if you have a business meeting arranged.
Of course, Essen itself has enough to offer to its visitors, being in the heart of the Ruhr region. The city’s long history is encapsulated by Essen Cathedral, which is a stone’s throw from your hotel. Alternatively, how about a bit of free fresh-air goodness for your body and soul? The many parks around the city are the perfect place to relax and are the reason why Essen has earned the title of ‘greenest city in North Rhine-Westphalia’. The location of our Motel One design hotel, right in the centre of the pedestrianised zone on Kennedyplatz, makes it ideal – and good value for money – for anyone looking for adventure and enjoyment. The city centre is packed with restaurants, bars, museums and stores, all waiting to be discovered. Excellent connections mean that you’re never far from either the city’s hotspots or the surrounding area. A few highlights include Grillo-Theater, Colosseum Theater, Messe Essen exhibition centre, Lake Baldeney and Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex, the symbol of the Ruhr region. This industrial landmark is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and definitely shouldn’t be missed. So: get ready and see you soon in Essen!
