A stroll inspired by a genius
Our Hotel Ulm
In Ulm, we’re shouting about the opening of our first hotel from the rooftops – or rather from the large carillon at the Abt department store: our Motel One is located directly on Münsterplatz. The over 100-year-old department store has an impressive exterior that features an old carillon clock made from Meissen porcelain. It plays Swabian songs five times a day during summer and Christmas melodies in winter.
Inside our hotel, Ulm’s most famous resident – Albert Einstein – welcomes you with a quote about his hometown, to which he was extremely attached: “…we also owe part of our being to our birthplace. So I look on Ulm with gratitude, as it combines noble artistic tradition with a simple and healthy way of being.” If you would also like to experience what makes Ulm so special, then check in and enjoy a stroll in and around Ulm!
Albert Einstein chose to go against the flow and often did his own flamboyant thing. This is also reflected in the choice of interior details in this hotel – all highly unusual, such as the ‘Chubby Chic’ armchair with graffiti fabric by Moroso or the mustard yellow ‘Metamorphose’ carpet by Christian Fischbacher.
Chain reaction
Inspired by Einstein, who laid the foundations for modern atomic and particle physics, atoms and molecular structures can be found all over our Ulm hotel, in the form of lights, furniture, carpets and graphics. Keep an eye out for the molecular chains adorning the back wall of the reception area, illuminated by spherical Artemide lights.
Attention to detail
Ulm is still a city of science today. The research centres of major companies such as Daimler, Liebherr, BMW and Continental are based here. In our business centre, you, too, can let your imagination run wild – maybe you have equally ingenious ideas? Get inspired by the ‘Zettel’z’ lamp by Ingo Maurer: printed notes provide information about the lamp’s dimensions, luminosity, the weight of its components, a timeline of its production and its overall weight… for anyone who always wants to know the precise details!
Sun, moon and stars
Our fifth-floor lounge directly under the eaves is intended to make you feel as if you are looking at the night sky through a telescope: overhead, stars – or tiny suns to be precise – shine even during the day in the form of ‘In The Sun’ lights by DCW. Underfoot, the ‘Spacecrafted’ carpet by Jan Kath shows just how stunning the Milky Way is – it’s simply out of this world.
Planetary show
Your journey through space continues on the other side of the lounge: artist Paula Raché has captured her perspective of our small, large universe by means of a vibrant mural. Bocci’s ‘28 Copperleuchte’ hovers overhead, its glass spheres reminiscent of all the celestial bodies that are probably still waiting in the infinite expanses of space.
Well calculated
Our bar is also up here. It not only boasts a unique view of Ulm Minster: various formulas, physical drawings and calculations also adorn its back wall. Einstein’s notebook must have looked something like this. Don’t worry, we won’t quiz you on these – you just need to remember your room number. And if there are no stars in the sky, the ‘Curled Disc’ lights by Quasar will create a romantic atmosphere in the evening.
Heavenly dreams
So much scientific stimulation might leave your head spinning. How about we leave you with a few more light-hearted impressions of Ulm? Designer Paula Raché has also created artwork for the bedrooms that uses charming details to depict anecdotes from the city’s history: ‘Fischstecher’, the jousting tournament, the ‘Ulmer Schachtel’, a flat-bottomed river boat that has been used as a means of transport on the Danube since the Middle Ages, the Ulm Tailor, flying over the rooftops, and, of course, the Ulm Sparrow. Have you never heard of these? Then here’s some (bedtime) reading about Ulm and the surrounding area!
