The combination of the historic buildings with their influences of Jugendstil, Art Deco but also industrial elements, as well as the modern, young community that lives and works here, stands for Berlin's rather unique attitude of constantly reinventing itself, not covering the old but rediscovering it. This flair has also found its way into our lobby: Art nouveau elements meet modern furniture, traditional tile patterns are juxtaposed with hip, young art, old materials are reinterpreted and upgraded into interesting design objects in the spirit of the current upcycling scene. Who says old and new can't get along?

Making an entrance

Come in and find the first of many design highlights right at check-in: the Gubi - Multi-Lite lamps, reminiscent of the Art Deco style with their brass finish and shaping. In contrast, the back wall of the reception highlights the industrial character of the Hackesche Höfe: the steel construction filled with antique mirrors is reminiscent of windows and gives the room additional depth.

Background Check

While you're here, perhaps you'd like to have a drink? Reception and bar are particularly close to each other in this Motel One! You will certainly notice the bar front, which imitates the window shapes of the famous Chameleon Theatre in the Höfe with black steel cut-outs. The turquoise tiles that adorn the bar and lounge are from Golem, a company which specialises in the production of Art Nouveau tiles like those still found in the courtyards. By the way: Mirror, mirror on the back wall of the bar? Not at all, it is also tiled, with a black high-gloss tile.

The only way is up...

...namely UP-cycling, making something new out of something old! The room divider and workbench come from the workshop of the Dutch upcycling professional and designer Piet Hein Eek, who has already furnished our Motel One Amsterdam-Waterlooplein. His works are flea market finds and scrap materials that he reprocesses. The workspace is decorated with vases by Studio Kalff, which creates unique filigree pieces from old crockery and glass objects.

Down to earth

The creative second-hand idea also plays the main role under your feet: fashion and textile designer Lara Wernert has developed a new kind of carpet concept: From surplus selvages of the wool weaving mill ROHI, she lays unique carpets that become one-of-a-kind and eye-catching pieces for every room thanks to a special felting technique. That's what we call well-(g)rounded.

But which one? In the lounge, there is no shortage of eclectic seating options, which you can all try out right until you decide on your personal favourite: whether it's the Baxter rocking chair "Ingrid", the "Bat Lounge Chair" by Gubi or our Egg Chair by Fritz Hansen - a velvety smooth choice!

Tape That

Eye-catcher of the lounge is the collage-like, multi-layered wall installation by the Kreuzberg "Tape That" artist collective. Their passion is art with adhesive tape and their work plays with patterns and forms of Art Nouveau and Art Deco and contrasts them with the colourful, sweeping influences of modern Berlin. The combination of different materials and surfaces - such as metal and plexiglass, rich colours and shimmering gold elements stands for the changeable and individual history of the courtyards. There, too, you will find a mixture of elegance, industrial history, but also creativity and street art.

Room for more

In keeping with the lobby, the rooms are also decorated in muted, earthy tones, lending even more power to the colour-intensive art. The original designed for us by "Tape That" was reproduced for the rooms and additionally individualised by the artist with tapes. To further your unique experience with us: The bed headboard is made of the sustainable loden fabric "Benu Remix" by Fischbacher, which is made from recycled PET bottles, among other things, and thus fits the upcycling character of the lobby.
