What's so special about Graz, you ask? Today: capital of Styria and second largest city in Austria. In the past, it was the site of a small castle (gradec in Slavic) and later a Habsburg royal seat. Graz manages the balancing act between its yesterday and tomorrow better than almost any other city: its old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, with its main square surrounded by buildings steeped in history, the opera house, the town hall and the clock tower.

Our Motel One Graz

At the same time, Graz was named City of Design by UNESCO in 2011 - and the Murinsel, Kunsthaus or Zaha Hadid's Argos building are just a few examples of the futuristic touch that now characterises Graz. Our Motel One Graz has also packaged itself accordingly and oscillates in design between historical and contemporary ... have a look!

From old to new to colourful
Our Motel One Graz is located in a building with a long history: the Dorotheum on Jakominiplatz used to be a magnificent department store before pragmatic concrete chic moved in during the 1970s. Now there is new splendour in old (building) substance, as both outside and inside, historical elements have been taken up and translated into the present day.
Oldie but Goldie
The reminiscences of its former elegance are played out primarily through architectural features. Stucco decorations, wallpaper patterns or the traditional herringbone parquet flooring on the reception and bar counter front skilfully pick up style elements of the past without appearing dusty.
Shine on
Because modern elements are not far away: the classic wall panelling and "24 Karati" glass chandeliers by Karman Italia, which are modelled on oversized chandelier elements, share space with modern "Bisel" side tables by Glas Italia.
Sunny side
The glass tables also reflect the sunny yellow eye-catcher in the entrance area - the Moroso "Bohemian" sofa. Quasar lights sparkle in the background and you can already catch a glimpse of art! Which has been given the leading role here in Graz to provide modern influences in a historical setting.
Graz-ious art
The Graz sister and artist duo Carola and Sabrina Deutsch helped design our lounge, floors and rooms. Their theme: "Above the roofs of Graz". When you enter, you are immediately greeted by a room divider with a reduced basic shape of the Graz clock tower and Graz impressions from street art to the town hall.
Space to unfold
Inspired by the listed roofscapes, historic house facades - side by side - with modern architectural buildings and facial expressions that reflect the multifaceted nature of the city, DECASA have also designed the large folding wall in the lounge. Here you can discover the rose garden as well as the Graz Cathedral, combined with floral, historic-looking patterns. Modern placeholders cavort in front of it, including the "Peacock" armchair by Cappellini in its green best!
Cup of coffee, anyone?
Things are more classical - at least at first glance - in the workbench area, where newly interpreted coffee house chairs by Ton make working more charming. Above them, the minimalist "Jane" liana lamp by XAL hangs relaxed, while the golden wall lamps above the quilted leather benches from the Graz design studio "13&9design" play an opulent home game.
Up, up, up
Finally and indeed true to the artistic motto, the lift, whose glazed shaft was also designed by DECASA, transports you over the roofs of Graz. Through an explosion of colour in the colours of the Graz city map - blue for water, green for forest, red for public transport, yellow and black for the road network - you travel up!
Graz all around
In the corridors of the floors, the artist duo has also immortalised themselves with painted elements and summaries of their overall artwork await in the rooms. The wallpapers in the rooms are deliberately kept in a reduced look to give more space to the colourfulness. Space to see, feel and discover the new old Graz.
