Travelling responsibly
Experiencing nature in the city
A walk in the park, a cycle ride along the river or a picnic in the countryside: it’s good for you and shows a different side to the city. To make sure it stays that way:
- Stay on the paths, especially in nature reserves and the dunes.
- Do not feed wild animals and keep your distance, especially during the breeding season.
- Take your rubbish home with you, even small items such as cigarette ends.
- Pay attention to information signs, e.g. regarding swimming areas, dog-leash requirements or restricted areas.
- Come on foot, by bike or by public transport.

Being a respectful guest
In many city centres, people live where others go on holiday. There are a few things that help to ensure everyone feels at ease:
- Keep it quiet in residential streets at night.
- Visit well-known sights early in the morning or in the evening, and explore neighbourhoods away from the main tourist hotspots.
- Ensure you dress appropriately and remain quiet in churches, mosques, synagogues, temples and places of remembrance. Respect service times.
- Only take photographs of people with their consent.
- Put rubbish in the bins and leave public places as you found them.
- Shop in local shops, cafés and markets.
- Observe local rules. Some cities, for example, have bans on alcohol in public spaces or rules governing group tours.
