What makes Koblenz special?

Koblenz owes its name to its location at the ‘Confluentes’, the confluence of the Rhine and the Moselle – which remains the heart of the city to this day. At the Deutsches Eck, right on this spot, history and city life come face to face: the monumental equestrian statue of Emperor Wilhelm I, the view of the two rivers and the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress opposite make this one of Germany’s most famous photo spots.

Around the old town, narrow alleyways, historic squares and half-timbered houses line the streets, bearing witness to the city’s long history as a Roman settlement, an electoral residence and a Prussian fortress town. At the same time, Koblenz is a city perfect for a leisurely stroll: along the banks of the Rhine and the Moselle, in the Rhine Park and on the way to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, sightseeing and relaxation take turns time and again.

The main attractions in Koblenz

  • Deutsches Eck – the confluence of the Rhine and the Moselle, featuring the striking Kaiser Wilhelm Monument, the city’s central landmark
  • Ehrenbreitstein Fortress – one of the largest surviving fortress complexes in Europe, towering high above the Rhine, featuring the State Museum and offering sweeping views over Koblenz; accessible on foot, by bus or by cable car across the Rhine
  • Old Town with its historic market square – half-timbered houses, narrow alleyways and squares such as Florinsmarkt and Jesuitenplatz
  • Electoral Palace – a Neoclassical palace on the banks of the Rhine, once the residence of the Electors of Trier
  • St Castor’s Basilica – one of the city’s oldest churches, situated right next to the Deutsches Eck
  • Balduin Bridge – historic bridge over the Moselle with views of the Old Town
  • Rhine-Moselle Hall and riverside promenades – a hub for events, walks and views of both rivers
  • Löhrstraße and the city centre – the city’s main shopping and pedestrian zone
