Let the water flow!

Lake Flückiger in the heart of the city

Just 10 minutes from the city centre, Seepark offers a true local recreational paradise. The question “How far is Flückigersee from Freiburg?” doesn’t even arise. Located right in the heart of Freiburg’s Betzenhausen district, Flückigersee is part of the city.
The lake is situated on the 35-hectare site of the former State Garden Show. There, you can browse through books in the shade, go pedal boating, swim or simply take a stroll.
Those with a taste for adventure can even go diving here in search of a pirate ship. The ship sailed across the lake during the State Garden Show and was then sunk to mark the park’s opening.

A wide variety of sightseeing

Follow the stream

Follow the water: Naturally, a stroll through the old town is a must-see in Freiburg too. What makes this Black Forest city special is that, as you wander through the historic streets, you not only pass the main sights such as the Neukloster or Freiburg Minster, but also come across shallow water channels time and again. The ‘Bächle’ have always been part of Freiburg and, according to local legend, ensure that you’ll never want to leave the city. For anyone who accidentally steps into or falls into a ‘Bächle’ is destined to marry a local.

Entertainment for children: The ‘Bächle’ are also the perfect entertainment for families travelling with young children. With the ‘Bächle’ boats, children can let wooden boats float along on a string beside them and explore the city in a playful way.

A Bächle picnic involves finding a cosy spot along the Bächle with your partner, family or friends, relaxing and enjoying the moment. Picnic packs are available, ready-packed for collection.

Flowing waters

You don’t have to drive from the hotel in Freiburg to Lake Flückiger to cool off. A quick dip in the Dreisam is all it takes to cool down. The shallow river forms steps and shallow pools within the city. You can cool off here just a 10-minute walk from the hotel.

A leisurely drive

Freiburg is surrounded by vineyards. If you enjoy a glass of wine, you should take the opportunity to visit the local vineyards. The Kaiserstuhl, for example, is a lovely place to visit. The vineyards in the Vauban district are particularly easy to reach.

Underground

Just outside the city, but the perfect place to escape a heatwave, is the Schauinsland Museum Mine. In the former silver mine, you can explore the labyrinthine network of tunnels, climb ladders to reach higher levels, and marvel at the original machinery.

Fancy something a bit exotic?

You can find it at the University Botanical Garden! In this small park in the Herdern district, there are plants from the Mediterranean and the tropics, both in the greenhouses and in the outdoor areas. Here, you can daydream of exotic places, put your feet up after a stroll through the city, and enjoy the shade on sunny days.

A culinary delight meets music

Surrounded by vineyards and blessed with many balmy summer nights – in Freiburg, summer is a time for lavish celebrations.

Schlossberg Festival: For 40 years, celebrations have taken place every August on the city hill. People dance and feast under the starry sky to a varied programme of music. There’s something to suit every musical taste, by the way – from the moat to the castle, there are various stages offering everything from electro to salsa. Things take on a romantic air as darkness falls: fairy lights then create the perfect atmosphere.

Hocks: Celebrations take place throughout the summer at the Hocks in Freiburg’s neighbourhoods. Hocks refers to cosy get-togethers over local wine and beer, accompanied by traditional dishes. These neighbourhood culinary festivals are accompanied by music from local music societies.

Zelt-Musik-Festival (ZMF): The ZMF has been held every July and August at the Mundenhof since 1983. Entry to the site is free. On-site, cabaret, concerts and performances take place on three stages. In the marquees, you can also listen to (paid) concerts by national and international artists.

Freiburg Wine Festival: Freiburg without a glass of wine? Hard to imagine. Wine and the good life are celebrated in style in July on the square around Freiburg Minster. Wines from the Breisgau, Kaiserstuhl and Markgräfler Land regions are served there, alongside Baden specialities.
