Historical Moments

...at Motel One Leipzig-Nikolaikirche

Leipzig Nikolaikirche is a grand name for a hotel. In the autumn of 1989, the Nikolaikirche, or St. Nicholas Church, in Leipzig was the starting point for the peaceful revolution in the former GDR, which brought about the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989.

It is in exactly this location where you´ll now find our Motel One Leipzig-Nikolaikirche, which is shedding light on this important piece of history once again for our guests. Togetherness and peace are the themes that characterised this exciting period. We hope to mirror these values in our own design and service.

Also the demands written on the posters of the city´s ´Monday Demonstrations´, which you can discover on the panels of our room dividers, bring the peaceful revolution back to life. ´Cleo´ armchairs by Rossin fit in perfectly, whether with or without quilted padding.

A Festival of Lights

Candles have always symbolised special moments and their soft light is ubiquitous at Motel One. Glittering like a sea of light, the chandelier, which is manufactured in Tuscany by II Pezzo Mancante, hangs above the large natural stone table by Draenert. The beautifully sparkling glass shards of the chandelier's candels and the ´Etica´ Pendant Lamp by ILIDE enlighten you already during breakfast.

Symbolic Moments

A real highlight in the bar area are the 34 hand-polished glass cylinders made by the british glass designer Heather Gillespie. Her inspirational motif was the crown of the late gothic colums in Leipzig´s St. Nicholas Church which can also be seen on the nearby Friedenssäule (Peace Column). Before creating an artwork, Gillespie does numerous sketches. Once the glass is blown, she begins cutting and polishing it. Only then she begins with the engraving, which has become her signature. Fragile but at the same time powerful pieces!

Bar 89

At our Bar 89 you can philosophise to your heart´s content while contemplating the images and texts that are an integral part of our interior design. If you look closely enough, you will also see the floral crown of the Peace Column replicated on our wallpaper. A collage created exclusively for Motel One.
