Microplastics: what we avoid in our hotels

Microplastics are now on everyone’s lips. Unfortunately, in the truest sense of the word: these plastic particles, which are less than five millimetres in diameter, are already found everywhere – from the depths of the oceans to the highest mountains, from the air we breathe to the water we drink.

Microplastics are plastic particles smaller than five millimetres.

There are two types. Secondary microplastics are formed when larger pieces of plastic break down due to abrasion, UV light, salt and temperature fluctuations – such as plastic waste in the environment. Primary microplastics are deliberately manufactured and added to products such as cosmetics or cleaning products. They enter the wastewater when we shower or clean, are not completely filtered out at sewage treatment works, and thus end up in rivers and the sea.

The most effective approach is not to use plastic in the first place. Where that isn’t possible, we focus on reusing and using recycled materials.
