Stop 1 - Munich

Our Motel One Munich

UNIQUE

Up close with Munich's First Lady: The "Wiesn" may unfortunately have been cancelled, but at the same time this means that you now have a clear view and THE photo opportunity with the Bavaria statue at the Theresienwiese.

CONQUER THE CITY IN A DIFFERENT WAY

By bike
: Bikesharing providers can be found at every corner of the city like Call a Bike or MVG Bike and thematic bike tours, e.g. for "Zuagroaste", where you can see a nice cross section of Munich, can be found here

By tram: The inexpensive, comfortable alternative for sightseeing: Line 16 runs from "Tivolistraße" at the English Garden via the National Museum and Haus der Kunst, past the famous Eisbach wave, the Maximilaneum, Isartor and Sendlinger Tor to Stachus and finally to Nympenburg Castle (terminus Romanplatz).

TAKE A BREAK

Cheers! In Munich, a stop in one of the many beer gardens (where the local customs can be particularly well observed) is a must. The Beer Garden Map offers orientation or the app "Biergartenfreunde", which shows the nearest beer garden (for iOS & Android)

Cooling down - Strolling along the Isar river in fine weather, sitting on the bank and watching people - there is nothing more typically Munich than this! The kiosk at the Reichenbachbrücke (U-Bahn Fraunhoferstraße) is open 23 hours a day for snacks and drinks. Bathing is also possible thanks to excellent water quality.

AND IN THE EVENINGS?

Sundowner: Pack a picnic and enjoy the sunset at these five especially romantic spots: Hackerbrücke, Friedensengel, Olympiaberg, Monopteros, Luitpold Park.

Drive-in cinemas: Fancy a bit of good entertainment with retro flair? Off to the drive-in cinema in Aschheim. A car is obligatory but Car-Sharing providers are already tinkering with offers!

=> By the way, should the weather not play along: Museums, exhibitions, restaurants and cafés have been reopened in Bavaria.

Stopover - Prien am Chiemsee

Stop 2

Lake Chiemsee, also known as the Bavarian Sea, is the largest lake in Bavaria and therefore...

  • Jump right in: Head straight to the lake and enjoy the clear water at one of the various lidos or bathing areas!
  • Ahoy! Pedal boats, electric boats, rowing boats or kayaks? You have the choice of which vehicle you want to use to romp around on Lake Chiemsee - even without a boat licence. It is great for picnics and discovering quiet bays for bathing - including a panoramic view of the mountains.
  • Royal Round: Either you go to sea yourself or take the official boat lines from Prien and Gstadt to Herreninsel and Fraueninsel, where the famous Herrenchiemsee Castle awaits you.
  • Not a water rat? No problem: on the "Prien Postcard Trail" you will find beautiful views combined with interesting information about the surrounding area.

Not in the mood to continue straight away? Then why not spend a pleasant evening in the nearby Achental Golf Resort in Grassau. Here you can try your hand at the driving range against a picturesque mountain backdrop or treat yourself to a little wellness. Or start a cycling tour in the surrounding area (routes of various lengths are available here, bikes can be rented in the hotel). Well, actually, you could also stay two nights, or three...

Stop 3 - Salzburg

Our Motel One Salzburg

OLD MEETS NEW

Very oldschool: The old town is not for nothing part of the UNESCO world cultural heritage. Walking among the pastel-coloured old buildings, you can tick off the top sights one after the other, such as the Residenzplatz, cathedral, Getreidegasse, Mozart's birthplace and more - and treat yourself to one or the other Sachertorte or Mozartkugel (which was invented here in the Fürst confectionery). Shhh! Open your ears: Every Sunday at 11:45 a.m. trumpet sounds resound from Hohensalzburg Fortress, reminding us of the tradition of blowing the tower as a warning signal or announcement of important events.

Walk of Modern Art: The baroque city of Salzburg also has surprisingly modern sides. Discover 14 contemporary open-air installations by various artists on a tour of the Salzburg Art Project.

HIGH UP

Best views: Fortress Hohensalzburg is on the to-do list for almost every visitor. But if you are looking for alternatives for a view of Salzburg, there are certainly possibilities: one is the Mönchsberg, on whose summit the new Museum of Modern Art is waiting for you. The 500 metres in altitude can be conquered by lift or on foot. Speaking of walking: there are more walking trails through the nature reserve up there.

On the other bank: For those who like less hustle and bustle, a detour to the other, no less charming side of the Salzach is worthwhile. From Linzer Gasse you can climb the Kapuzinerberg, from where several vantage points offer panoramic views of the old town and fortress. On the Kapuzinerberg, a small fortified building, the Franziskischlössel, also promises refreshment for those who climb to the top.

FOR THE SENSES

Mirabile! On the other side of the Salzach, there is also the Mirabell Palace, today the offices of the Salzburg Mayor and the City Council, with the Mirabell Garden. It is now in full bloom and is open for a rest with its splashing fountains and stoic statues.

How international! A little extra treat for Hollywood fans: the musical "The Sound of Music" was partly filmed in the Mirabell Gardens. And on Mirabellplatz, catch some "Bella Italia" feeling: an Italian market awaits with corresponding delicacies (Wed, Thu, Fri & Sat 9am - 10pm, Sun & Mon 9am - 6pm).

Built close to the water: In summer you can cool off either at the water games in Hellbrunn Palace. Or south of the city in the Glasenbachklamm (20 min by car / 40 min by bus) - hike and then swim in the crystal clear natural pools.

CROWNING CONCLUSION

Clearly the best place for sunsets: the local mountain of the Salzburgers, the Gaisberg in the east. It can be explored and hiked or driven (20 min by car / 40 min by bus).

=> Rainy weather? No reason to mope: Museums, exhibitions, restaurants and cafés are open again in Austria.
