NORTHERN SERENITY

...at Motel One Lübeck

Our Motel One Lubeck is anchored in the heart of Lübeck’s old town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, right by the town hall and behind the Marienkirche church. It almost goes unnoticed, with its new interpretation of a traditional gabled house that harmoniously blends in with the surrounding architecture. This kind of architecture is common throughout Lübeck, but is especially characteristic of the historical merchant’s quarter.

And it’s not just our exterior that is easy on the eye. The interior pays homage to a tradition that has bestowed the Hanseatic city with prosperity and worldly flair: the maritime trading of goods from across the globe. This served as inspiration for the hotel alongside the literary works of Lübeck-born brothers Heinrich and Thomas Mann. Welcome to our small and refined merchant’s villa in the heart of Lübeck!

The gateway to the north

...as Lübeck is commonly called, welcomes you upon arriving at our hotel with its landmark – the Holsten Gate – as well as the city’s coat of arms, storage towers and more in the form of a room divider from the workshop of the young blacksmith Fabian Droste. With fire and flame, Droste cast the piece out of iron and brass specially for our One Lounge. His work consciously plays with the city’s historical symbols and is reminiscent of historical shields and guild signs in both material and representation.

Elegance as far as the eye can sea

Sea foam grey, stormy blue and sea green – in our lounge, you can literally smell the salty sea breeze. The charming amber-coloured glass lights by Bocci add a warm glow to the fresh colours of the furniture, the majority of which come from Danish design houses such as Space Copenhagen and NORR11, including the sand-coloured Mammoth chair made from natural leather. The pure and natural style of Scandinavian design, with its clean lines, is the perfect accompaniment to the German Baltic Sea elegance. This is complemented with wooden details reminiscent of the panels on ships and driftwood, as well as little Hanseatic cog ships floating on the shelves.

A drink in the storehouse

Crates are piled up high behind the counter in our bar. Featuring labels such as Salz (salt), Hering (herring) and trade symbols, the crates are reminiscent of the storerooms where merchants once stored their international treasures. Original pieces from old merchant shops gathered on the shelves also offer a glimpse of Lübeck’s past, giving an insight into the daily life of merchants around the year 1900. The warm light from the limited edition Louis Poulsen PH31/2-3 pendant lights made of brass and amber-coloured glass direct the attention to a 21st century treasure: a large and international selection of gin.
